Chess Shorts terms of service

For the Chess Shorts iOS app · Last updated 16 October 2026

These terms govern your use of Chess Shorts (the “app”), an iOS application published by WHITEFORGE TECHNOLOGIES LTD (“Whiteforge”, “we”), a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17224707). By installing or using the app, you agree to these terms.

How Chess Shorts handles your data is described separately in the Chess Shorts privacy policy.

1. Licence

Chess Shorts is licensed to you, not sold. Subject to your compliance with these terms, Whiteforge grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use the app on Apple devices that you own or control. The app is distributed through the Apple App Store, and your use is also subject to Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement; where these terms and Apple’s EULA conflict, Apple’s EULA governs the matters it covers.

2. In-app purchase

Chess Shorts is free to download and includes a limited number of free videos. “Chess Shorts Pro” is a one-time, non-consumable in-app purchase that removes the watermark, removes the free-video limit, and unlocks all board themes. It is not a subscription. All purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store; Whiteforge does not handle your payment details. Pricing is shown in the app at the time of purchase. Refunds are handled by Apple in accordance with Apple’s policies — request them through Apple, not Whiteforge. You can restore a previous purchase on a new device using “Restore purchase” while signed in with the same Apple ID.

3. Your games and content

You are responsible for the chess games you import and the videos you create. You should only import games you have the right to use. Videos you create with Chess Shorts are yours to publish; Whiteforge claims no ownership of them. You are responsible for your use of the videos on third-party platforms (such as YouTube, TikTok and Instagram) and for complying with those platforms’ terms.

4. Third-party chess services

When you import a game by link, Chess Shorts retrieves that game’s moves from Lichess or Chess.com using their public interfaces. Your use of data obtained from those services is subject to their respective terms of service, including Lichess’s terms and Chess.com’s terms. Whiteforge is not responsible for those services, and they may change or restrict access at any time, which may affect the import feature.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

6. Intellectual property

The app, its design, and its code are owned by Whiteforge and protected by law. The chess engine (Arasan) and chess library (ChessKit) are used under the MIT licence, and the chess piece artwork by Colin M.L. Burnett is used under the BSD licence; the applicable notices are shown in the app under Settings → Acknowledgements.

7. Disclaimer of warranties

The app is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, to the fullest extent permitted by law. Whiteforge does not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted or error-free, that evaluations or pacing will suit every game, or that the third-party import services will remain available. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits any rights you have as a consumer that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

8. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Whiteforge will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for any loss of data or profits, arising out of or in connection with your use of the app. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

9. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. If we do, we will update the “Last updated” date above. Your continued use of the app after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales will have non-exclusive jurisdiction, without affecting any mandatory consumer-protection rights in your country of residence.
